The Colombian government and dissidents of the FARC guerrilla group that signed a 2016 peace pact, start talks with a view to demobilizing some 3,500 fighters and putting an end, once and for all, to their armed insurgency. A joint statement did not specify how soon the ceasefire would take effect but said peace talks would subsequently begin between the government and the dissidents of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), an insurgency that laid down arms in 2016.
