Freelance writer Melissa Petro used to teach elementary school in New York City. She truly, madly, and deeply loved her work. Then, the press got hold of her work history in the sex industry. After a headline about her read: 'Bronx Teacher Admits: I'm An Ex-Hooker," she was fired. But according to Business Insider, Petro took that painful, humiliating experience and turned it into what she wanted all along: life as a writer. To deal with such a forced career pivot, Petro says it's important to stop knocking on the same doors that have already closed on you. After continuing to apply for teaching jobs, she eventually gave up and began interviewing for writing jobs and pitching stories. She also cut her expenses drastically, and contacted everyone she knew--even vaguely--for help, ideas, referrals, and contacts. Finally, she learned to learn again, but outside formal degree programs. Ten years into life as a freelancer, she's gone from $20,000 a year to $60,000 a year!
Nevada’s LGBTQ community has a reason to celebrate amid a contentious election week. The Silver State became the first to enshrine same-sex marriage rights in its constitution. Nearly 62% of voters Tuesday backed a constitutional amendment recognizing equal marriage. The exact wording defines marriage “as between couples regardless of gender.” HRC Nevada State Director Briana Escamilla said that she hoped the amendment would make waves. Perhaps it would remind lawmakers “across the country that LGBTQ equality is a winning issue.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average broke above 20,000 points at the New York Stock Exchange for the first time Wednesday morning, setting a new record on Wall Street. The second-oldest stock market index in the US nearly reached this landmark on two previous occasions before reaching the once evasive mark at the opening bell. At the trading day's closing bell, the index had set a record high of 20,068. The DJIA, also known as the Dow 30, measures the performance of the 30 largest publicly owned companies trading in the US. Apple, Goldman Sachs and ExxonMobil are among some of those companies.
