A number of people have been infected with necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly known as flesh-eating disease, in Japan since the beginning of the year.There had been a total of 273 cases of flesh-eating bacteria in Japan as of December 2014. Following the appearance of several new cases this year, the total number of cases has risen to 279.
A Texas woman is now blind in one eye after she was infected with flesh-eating bacteria while competing in a mud run in Dallas earlier this month.Brittany Williams from north Texas became infected with flesh-eating bacteria in her eye during a mud run in Dallas. Within 24 hours the bacteria had destroyed her cornea.

Other researchers are looking into the use of magnetic 'nano-coils' to break down plastics. Just half the width of a human hair, they convert plastic into carbon dioxide and water.
