French Prez Hollande And His $11K A Month Barber Habit

Description

Deeply unpopular Socialist leader French President Francois Hollande, who was elected on a populist mandate of taxing the super-wealthy, is embroiled in an embarrassing scandal over the exorbitant price of his hair care. 10,000 euros (or $11,000) a month, to be specific. Detractors have dubbed the scandal #Coiffeurgate. Hollande had to address the subject Thursday in his traditional Bastille Day televised interview. The French President defended his spending on the presidential barber. He reminded the nation that since being elected in 2012 as a defender of the poor, he has cut his own salary by 30 percent, reduced the Elysee Palace budget by 9 million euros and cut its staff by 10 percent. Visibly uncomfortable with the subject, he said, "You can reproach me on anything you like, but not on that."

  • Hollande: the French have turned their backs on politics

Paris, Jun 25 (EFE).- (Camera: Mario García Sánchez) The French people have lost hope in politics mainly due to the decomposition of traditional parties, according to former French president Francois Hollande. FOOTAGE OF THE INTERVIEW WITH FRANÇOIS HOLLANDE AT HIS OFFICE IN PARIS, WHERE CURRENTLY HE LEADS A SOCIAL FOUNDATION. SOUNDBITES IN FRENCH OF FRANÇOIS HOLLANDE.Translations:"Today, the French have turned their backs on politics, as we can see by the very high levels of electoral abstention. This disenchantment is the result not only of successive alternations, which have not brought all the expected results, but also of a disintegration, a decomposition, of the major democratic forces.”"It happened to me once and not about me, it is better to avoid any kind of self-centered compassion. It happened to me once not being able to hold back tears during the Bataclan bombing ceremony.""There is a moment when the tears are stronger than anything else. They just come down.”"On an international level, my biggest regret is not having intervened in Syria in August 2013 after Bashar al-Assad started using chemical weapons. France could not act alone, it is true. I regret that Barack Obama did not support us. It is a regret because if we had attacked the Syrian regime at that time, we would have, without any doubt, prevented the radicalization of the opposition.""The second regret is that we were too slow in fighting the financial crisis and strengthening the euro zone. It is true that it was a success to have kept Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece in the euro zone, but we could have done it more quickly.""President Macron has not yet finished his term, we will see if he will present himself as a candidate again, although everything indicates that he is preparing for it. The game is still open."
