The murky world of arms-dealing: fears for Middle East stability amid record weapon sales

Description

French officials are celebrating another major arms deal with the sale of 30 military helicopters to Kuwait. The two countries are also fighting together in the coalition against the Islamic State Group. Meanwhile, a Saudi-led coalition has recommenced airstrikes in Yemen after the collapse of UN-brokered peace talks. With billions of Euros expected to be spent on weapons this year in the Middle East alone, some are warning that it's fuelling serious tension in an already unstable region.

IS-controlled villages are only about a mile away, so women have learned how to use weapons and have started guarding their families' houses at night, in order to help their men, which rotate in and out of the frontline. Villagers fear that IS could sneak across the Tigris river and into the village under the cover of night, and are complaining that locals don't have enough weapons to defend themselves.

Israel has far outpaced the rest of the world with its vaccination campaign. In fact, it has already administered the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to about one in five of its citizens. Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a deal with Pfizer to secure enough doses to immunize its adult population by the end of March.
