A 69-year-old man drifted in rough waters off Japan for nearly a day clinging to the bottom of his capsized boat until he was rescued by the coast guard.
Border guards patrolling the Kerch Strait picked up a man sailing a hand-made raft of plastic bottles on Wednesday and brought him into custody. Authorities noticed the man's ludicrous floating device while patrolling the water around a mile from the coastline. It turned out that the man, a 53-year-old native of Tashkent, was attempted to make the crossing from the Russian mainland to the Crimean peninsula via his rickety, hand-made contraption. Police gave the traveller a warning for violating the marine travel laws and sent him on his way.
Video released by the U.S. Coast Guard shows a sailor's dramatic leap to safety from a disabled sailing boat. Rough cut (no reporter narration).
