NTSB investigating hot air balloon crash

NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt says investigative groups will collect evidence and try to determine the cause of a hot air balloon crash in Texas that killed 16 people, "so that we can keep it from happening again." Rough Cut (no reporter narration).

  • Russian Orthodox Priest Breaks Hot Air Balloon Record

    Renowned Russian adventurer and Orthodox priest Fyodor Konyukhov set a new world record when he successfully landed with his crew in his hot air balloon near Saratov on Thursday, after flying the balloon for more than 55 hours. The record-breaking voyage began on February 7 in the city of Rybinsk and covered a total distance of 640 miles across Russia. During the flight, the balloon reached the height of between 620 and 980 feet, flying at a speed of between 6 and 25 miles per hour. The endurance trip took the crew over many of Russian Orthodoxy's best known landmarks and churches. Konyukhov's flight exceeded the previous world record for a non-stop flight in a 9 000 to 12 000 m³ category hot air balloon, which was set by Japanese pilots Hirazuki Takezava and Michio Kanda in 1997, by more than four hours.
