Typhoon Meranti, believed to be the world's strongest storm this year, has hit Taiwan, leaving more than half a million homes without power and forcing around 1,500 people to be evacuated.
Toppled trees and branches litter the roads around Donghe village of coastal Taitung county where Typhoon Haikui hit. By Monday morning, 58,000 homes still had no electricity, while schools and businesses remained closed in 14 cities as torrential rain bucketed down. IMAGES
