30-Ton Meteorite Excavated in Argentina

Description

Footage released courtesy of Juan José Bergia and the Argentinian government on Monday shows scientists in Gancedo reeling in the biggest catch of their lives - a whole meteorite weighing 30 tons, or about 68,000 pounds, the second biggest ever to be recorded. The rock's discoverers estimate that the meteorite slammed into the earth as part of a meteor shower which took place around 4,000 years ago. The world's largest discovered meteorite was found in Namibia in the beginning of 20th century and weighed over 50 tons, or over 110,000 pounds. Meteorites are space rocks that often contain extremely rare and valuable material, including alloys and elements not found on the earth. They are also extremely valuable for academic research.
