Raymond, Jul 14 (EFE/EPA).- Firefighters battling a blaze that extends for more than 38,590 hectares (150 square miles) in Northern California - the state's largest this year - have made major progress in recent hours, the United States Forest Service said Wednesday.That agency's latest bulletin said that the so-called Beckwourth Complex Fire has been 71 percent contained, up from 26 percent contained on Tuesday.Formed by the lightning-triggered Dotta and Sugar blazes, that fire is affecting Plumas National Forest, which is located near the city of Beckwourth - and northwest of Lake Tahoe - at the northern terminus of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. A Missouri woman has been charged with five counts for taking a splintered nameplate belonging to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Newser reports Emily Hernandez committed the deed during the January 6th riot at the US Capitol. Hernandez was charged, among other crimes, with disorderly conduct and the stealing or disposing of government property. The FBI received online tips from at least three people saying they saw Hernandez in TV news footage. She was filmed holding up a broken engraved piece of wood bearing the words 'House' and 'Nancy' during the storming of the Capitol.
Another voice has joined the chorus of business leaders running away from their support of US President Donald Trump. Business Insider reports billionaire venture capitalist Doug Leone was once one of Trump's strongest supporters in Silicon Valley. However, Business Insider reports he now says he believes Trump was responsible for inciting the riots. After last week's horrific events, President Trump lost many of his supporters, including me. Doug Leone Managing Partner, VC Sequoia Capital Global Leone has donated to many Republicans including at least $2,700 in 2018 to Josh Hawley. Hawley is the Republican Senator from Missouri who voted against certifying the election results after the riots.
At least five Los Angeles County hospitals had to turn patients away on Sunday, citing an 'internal disaster.' In the week before Christmas, the state averaged more than 40,000 new coronavirus infections every day. CNN reports that at some area hospitals, aging infrastructure was unable to keep up with the high number of patients needing oxygen. The issue was not the lack of oxygen itself--rather, the buildings were unable to maintain the necessary pressure to deliver the oxygen. Some hospitals are moving COVID-19 patients down to lower floors to make it easier to pump the oxygen through pipes.
