  • Rohingyas tortured for trying to flee Bangladesh island, HRW says

Cox's Bazar, Apr 27 (EFE/EPA).- Nonprofit Human Rights Watch on Tuesday flagged the alleged torture and arbitrary arrest of many Rohingya refugees for trying to abandon a remote island where they had been transferred, supposedly voluntarily, to decongest the crowded refugee camps in southeastern Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government has so far relocated around 20,000 refugees to the Bhasan Char island in the Bay of Bengal, despite concerns among human rights groups over conditions on the island, which is prone to floods and had been uninhabited earlier. • Rohingya refugees mark third year of Myanmar exodus

Cox's Bazar, Aug 25 (EFE/EPA).- From the overcrowded camps in Bangladesh that house hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees, Mohammad Jubair on Tuesday marked a grim milestone: the third anniversary of the Myanmar military offensive that led to the exodus of at least 738,000 members of this mainly-Muslim minority from Rakhain state, where they had lived for generations. Restrictions imposed in the camps to contain the spread of the coronavirus have prevented him and other refugees from taking part in protests to demand security and citizenship guarantees from Myanmar as pre-conditions for their repatriation, as he did last year at the massive demonstration involving some 100,000 Rohingya.FOOTAGE OF REFUGEE CAMP IN COX'S BAZAR, BANGLADESH, SHOT AT THE END OF JULY, 2020.

  • Rohingya refugees with no place to go now turn to sea

Cox's Bazar, Aug 4 (EFE/EPA)-. Nur Ahmed, a Rohingya refugee, paid 40,000 taka ($470) to a trafficker to get on a boat in search of a better life in Malaysia, a trip that turned into a nightmare, like that of many other refugees who would rather risk dying at sea than live in Bangladeshi camps. Nur was one of 492 people that set sail on a Malaysian fishing boat in February, with the help of a Rohingya broker in the Kutupalang camps. The journey was supposed to take six days so no one was allowed to bring food. "If someone brought food the ship-men would seize it from them," said the 23-year-old Nur. But nothing went as planned. SHOT LIST: ROHINGYAS REFUGEES AT BANGLADESHI CAMPS. SOUND BITES:1. GUL BAHAR, A 40-YEAR-OLD REFUGEE My family has seven members. We are living in hardship due to the cost of food. Due to the hardship I decided to send my son Mohammad Alam (30) to Malaysia. To overcome our hardship, he left the house three months ago with a promise that ‘anyhow I will reach there.’ He floated in the sea for 40 days. Now he is detained in Bhasan Char. His mobile phone was taken away, so we cannot take any news. I heard from people that he is sick. The skin disease of scabies is eating him up. He could not eat food properly. I want my son back at home. We will manage somehow with his income. 2. CHALIM, A 52-YEAR-OLD REFUGEE My daughter Nur Qaeda got married with a boy living in Malaysia three years ago. She was held while travelling to Malaysia with the help of a trafficker her husband contacted. I heard she was kept in Bhasan Char but I am not getting any news of her.
