Not Today, Satan! Guatemalans Burn Devil Pinatas to Start Christmas Festivities

Description

Red devil pinatas lined the streets of Guatemala city on December 7th as city residents prepared for a firy annual tradition - La Quema del Diablo, or burning of the devil festival. Guatemalans have gathered in the streets on December 7th to burn effigies of Satan for over 300 years. The ritual 'cleansing' of bad spirits from their homes marks the start of Christmas festivities in the Central American country. But it’s not only the devil who gets set alight, Guatemalans also pick up pinatas of people who aren't very well-liked. Pinatas of US President Donald Trump sold especially well this year.

  • Dolly Parton Hopes Holiday Season Will Unite America

Dolly Parton is in the holiday spirit. The legendary country singer appeared on Sunday's episode of "Today" to talk about her new album, "A Holly Dolly Christmas," and "Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square," a Netflix musical. She didn't shy away from talking about the division in America. She said, "I think we've just become so divided, 'cause people just seem to love to hate," adding "But we need to carry that Christmas spirit of peace on Earth, and loving one another. We need to carry that into the new year." "A Holly Dolly Christmas" is Parton's first holiday album in 30 years, but she says that she's wanted to do one for a long time. Being on lockdown during the pandemic has given her time to write original songs and team up with friends like Miley Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon, who appear on the album. Dolly explained, "We can't save the world, but we can save the world we're living in." She added, "And Lord knows, I hope next year is better than this one."
