Porsche - Very special race

Description

It is 50 years since Vic Elford, Jochen Neerpasch, Rolf Stommelen, Jo Siffert and Hans Herrmann, at the wheel of the 907LH (Longtail), claimed the first of 22 overall victories for Porsche at the world-famous endurance race in Florida. As the most successful manufacturer in the history of this prestigious race, Porsche will once again be strongly represented at the 56th edition on 27th/28th January. The Porsche GT Team will field two 911 RSR at the opening round of the IMSA SportsCar Championship. The number 911 and 912 cars from Weissach will face stiff opposition from BMW, Chevrolet, Ferrari and Ford in what is traditionally the most fiercely-contested category – the GTLM class. Three 911 GT3 R will be run by Porsche customer teams in the GTD class. In total, nine works drivers and two Young Professionals will be in action for Porsche. The 24 Hours of Daytona is the first highlight of the 2018 motorsport year. Porsche has expanded its global commitment to GT racing this season, and has made organisational changes to allow this. Pascal Zurlinden takes over from Marco Ujhasi as the new Director GT Factory Motorsports. His predecessor will work closely with Porsche Digital GmbH in the future in his role as Project Manager Digitisation Motorsport. Sebastian Golz takes over project management of the 911 GT3 R, including works-assisted outings in the Intercontinental GT Challenge, Blancpain Endurance Series, and the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

  • Mark Webber and the Porsche GT3 RS at Nürburgring

"Not so long ago I was waxing lyrical about my first proper blast in the new GT3 RS. And I seem to remember suggesting a little trip to the track might be in order. I’ve been a tad busy, as have our GT3s you may have noticed, but the planets aligned and there we were: a closed Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit, unbroken sunshine and a GT3 RS all to myself. Now this place is pretty special to me, as it’s where I won my first F1 Grand Prix back in 2009. It’s always good to be back, but it’s especially good when you have a device that’s going to the surroundings justice. Tennis star Angelique Kerber wanted to see the GT3 RS for herself, too The GT3 RS has borrowed heavily from our race car programmes, and the fact that the underpinnings are now all rose jointed, and that it’s running such massive downforce, is testament to how seriously the GT division in Weissach have approached this car. No stone has been left unturned in improving traction and handling or reducing weight. This particular car also came equipped with the Weissach pack, which swaps in carbon fibre anti-roll bars and roof, a titanium roll cage and even thinner carpets. That all saves another 18kg, and I’ll take that any day of the week. You all know how proud I was of the GT2 RS last year, and with that Nordschleife lap record now safely under its belt, you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nowhere left to go. But you’d be reckoning without my buddy Andreas Preuninger and his very busy little team. The GT3 RS lapped the Nordschleife in well under seven minutes"

  • Le Mans is a Porsche racetrack - Double victory at the 24-hour marathon in Le Mans 2018

A pink car on the starting line of a race? And at one of the world's most important long-distance races to boot? This has never happened before. Wait a minute... Yes, it has happened before, in 1971! Back then, Porsche brought a special 917/20 Coupé to Le Mans. The car was a cross between a short and long-tail version. The Porsche Design Studio had it painted pink, and had the car optically divided into automotive "cuts," like on a butcher's diagram. No wonder the car caused a stir. A rather special name was quickly found for the racing car: "The sow." To this day, it remains one of Porsche's most famous cars, although it did not qualify at Le Mans. And because the sports car manufacturer is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2018, the company is once again bringing a "sow" to the starting line: the 911 RSR with the starting number 92. Even if history were to repeat itself, and this pink racing car were to drop out as well, it would not be a major drama. Rather, it would still be a self-confident appearance put in by a proud automobile manufacturer. But history did not repeat itself. On the contrary. In the Pro category, in which six manufacturers compete against each other, the "sow" finished first after 344 laps in the 86th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

  • The fastest Friday ever - Nordschleife record with the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo

After 35 years, the record has been broken. Timo Bernhard laps the Nordschleife in 5:19.546 minutes. It is May 28th, 1983. A young and talented racing driver is competing in the World Sportscar Championship of the ADAC 1000 Kilometer Race at the Nürburgring to qualify. He is driving a Porsche 956 K, chassis number 007. Nobody expected Stefan Bellof to make history that day. He drives the 20.832 kilometer track in the fabulous time of 6:11.13 minutes. A record! This record was to remain unbroken for 35 years. Until June 29th, 2018. Another special Porsche starts in the Green Hell: a 919 Hybrid Evo. At the wheel, Timo Bernhard. He completes the lap in an incredible 5:19.55 minutes, 51.58 seconds faster than Bellof.

  • Special Porsche 911 begins its journey of exploration

For approaching 60 years, the Porsche 911 has been pushed to extremes on both the track and on the open road. Now, a fresh chapter is being written; a unique pair of experimental 911 sports cars are being tested where there are no roads, where the air is thin, where the temperature is far below freezing and even plant life can’t survive.A team, led by endurance racer and adventurer Romain Dumas, has set out to explore the limits of the 911 and have opted for one of the toughest places on earth in which to begin the adventure – on the sheer slopes of Ojos del Salado, Chile, the highest volcano in the world. The first test of the team and the cars has taken place. And, as a consequence, a Porsche 911 became one of very few vehicles of any kind to have ever reached such an extreme altitude.Exploring up to 6,007 meters (19,708 feet), the 911, with Romain Dumas at the wheel, took on bolder strewn gradients as well as ice fields that tested the abilities of both the car and the team in temperatures hovering 30 degrees Celsius below freezing and with half the available oxygen in the air compared to at sea level. Impassable walls of seasonal snow and ice high up near the summit provided the upper limits of the test, which provided a tantalizing glimpse of what the cars are capable of in the right conditions. For now though, the test is complete – and the team elated by the experience.
