The 'Zouave' statue on the Pont d'Alma in Paris is an informal watchdog of the level of the River Seine. On Monday, after a weekend of rain, levels were in excess of 4.50 metres in the French capital, and above the Zouave's knees. IMAGES
In Paris, water levels exceed 4.30m as the Seine floods its banks. On the Pont de l'Alma bridge, the Zouave statue - an iconic but inaccurate indicator of water levels - is up to his calves in water. IMAGES
The level of the River Seine exceeds four metres in some areas of Paris, following heavy rains throughout the weekend. According to the latest forecasts, the alert level remains yellow, meaning major damage is likely to be avoided although access to the river banks remains closed. IMAGES
After the River Seine peaked at more than four metres above its normal level, the return to normal is expected to take weeks and be followed by a lengthy mop-up job for Parisians.
