Spanish Court Orders Jailed Catalan Separatist To Remain In Prison

Description

On Friday, Spain's Supreme Court ruled that Catalan separatist leader Oriol Junqueras must remain in custody after already serving over two months in prison while his role in the Spanish region's push for independence is investigated by authorities. Judges said in a written ruling that Junqueras posed a risk of again committing an offence as he has shown no sign of abandoning "the path followed so far." An election on December 21st gave separatists a slim majority in the regional parliament in a blow to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who had hoped it would quash the Catalan independence movement and end Spain’s worst political crisis in decades.
