  • Spain Bars Exiled Ex-Catalan Leader From European Election

    According to Reuters, Spain’s electoral commission barred former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont from running in the European Parliament elections in May. Puigdemont fled Spain in 2017 after Madrid imposed direct rule on the wealthy northeastern region which had unilaterally declared independence. Puigdemont and two other exiled candidates from his party said in a statement that the commission upheld an appeal against their candidacies.

  • Catalan Secessionists Support Former Ex-leader Once Again

    According to a report by Reuters, pro-independence Catalan politicians once again aim to nominate former leader Carles Puigdemont to lead their regional government, despite the leader's current self-imposed exile in Germany. A spokesman for the secessionist group in the regional parliament claimed they wanted to appoint him as their leader by May 14th. Secessionists managed to keep a slim majority in regional elections held in Catalonia in December.
