Hundreds of people gather in Athens to show their support for migrants and refugees on World Refugee Day, one of several events organised in the Greek capital to send a message of solidarity around the world. The policy of Greece's conservative government, which was voted in nearly a year ago, is to make the country a "less attractive" destination to migrants. There are around 120,000 of them in the country today. IMAGES

The service will take place at the Parque Tejo on the outskirts of the Portuguese capital, with many people having slept overnight in the park, which was built for the occasion on a former landfill site. The weather is a concern with temperatures expected to soar to 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit). IMAGES

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims cheer Pope Francis as the pontiff arrives at a Lisbon park for an homage to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at a global jamboree. It marks the pope's second mass event with participants at this year's World Youth Day, which is actually a six-day extravaganza and happens to be the largest Catholic gathering in the world. Local authorities estimate the crowd size at about 800,000 people. IMAGES
