Smoke billows over Gaza City at the end of the 23rd day of the war as fighting continues in the enclave after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli officials. Since the 7 October attack, more than 8,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's relentless retaliatory bombardment, half of them children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
