Seven ancient Egyptian tombs containing mummified cats and scarabs, have been discovered in the Saqqara necropolis, 30 km (19mi) south of Cairo.
An incredibly well-preserved ancient artwork, a detailed and colorful wall frieze showing two fanged beasts facing each other, was discovered under layers of mud and rock near the Peruvian capital Lima. Astonishingly, Peruvian archeologists have confirmed that polychrome friezes, discovered at Huaca Garagay archeological site near Lima's San Martin de Porres district on Thursday, are over 3,500 years old as determined by carbon dating. The monuments and walls are thought to have been built by the ancient Chavin people.
Ancient Egypt still has not revealed all her mysteries to modern archaeologists, new discoveries continue to provide more insight into the wonders of this ancient culture. Egyptian archaeologists discovered a necropolis concealing 17 intact mummies near the Nile Valley city of Minya on Sunday. The 17 bodies, which were extraordinarily well preserved within their bandages in the village of Tuna al-Gabal, were found with crockery items such as vases and cups, funeral masks and accessories, coins and papyri. Experts believe that, given the elaborated state of preservation of the mummies, the bodies belonged to priests and officials. The necropolis is the first one to be discovered in the western desert village. What other mysteries and ruins remain hidden beneath the sands of Egypt?
The mystery of ancient Egypt just became even more intriguing as parts of an ancient statue of Egyptian Pharaoh Psamtik I were unveiled at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo's Tahrir square on Thursday. A German-Egyptian archaeological mission discovered the finds on March 9. The newly discovered pieces of the Psamtik I statue will be moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum for restoration work. They are expected to be on display by the inauguration date of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, April 2018. Who knows what wonders still lay buried beneath the sands.
