Yangon, Myanmar, Mar 7 (EFE), (Camera: Stringer).- A politician arrested by the military junta died in police custody in Myanmar amid fresh anti-coup protests on Sunday.Khin Maung Latt, a member of the National League for Democracy party of the country's deposed leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was the party chairman in a Yangon township, the most populated city, local media Irrawaddy reported.He was arrested late Saturday.At least 54 protesters were killed and hundreds injured in the daily protests across the country against the Feb.1 coup.Despite the military repression, the Myanmar people again protested in several cities including the capital, Naypyitaw, and Mandalay, the country's second-largest city.They demanded the release of their leaders, including Suu Kyi, and the restoration of democracy in the country.FOOTAGE OF THE PROTESTS ON SATURDAY IN MANDALAY.
Tokyo, Feb 3 (EFE/EPA).- Myanmar demonstrators holding portraits of Aung San Suu Kyi gathered outside Japan's ministry of foreign affairs on Wednesday to protest against the military coup and the detention of the country’s de facto leader and politicians from National League for Democracy party.The protesters also called on Japan and the international body to further condemn the military’s actions. The army staged a bloodless coup Monday alleging that there was massive fraud in the elections, the second held since the transition to democracy in the country after almost half a century of fierce military dictatorship.Shortly before the putsch, Nobel laureate and de facto leader of the previous administration, Aung San Suu Kyi, various members of the government, regional presidents, politicians from Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party, activists and artists were detained by the military and are still under arrest, although charges against them are unknown. Myanmar's military on Monday staged a coup and declared a state of emergency to hold onto power for a year, citing electoral fraud in the November elections, and promised to hold new elections after which they would hand over power to the winner.
