Trump Urges Restraint, Downplays Moscow's Involvement In Venezuela Crisis

Description

US expectations were dashed this week for a peaceful transition of power in Venezuela. Now, CNN reports President Donald Trump is urging caution among senior advisers moving forward. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton have called vociferously for a change in power in Caracas. They've also consistently declined to rule out a US military intervention. After a phone call with President Vladimir Putin on Friday, Trump also downplayed Russia's involvement in Venezuela. The President contradicted claims from top Trump administration officials that Moscow continues to prop up the regime there.

In September, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US would place more sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Pompeo accused Maduro's government of working with Tehran 'to flout the UN arms embargo.' US officials say intervening to stop Iranian tankers from reaching Venezuela was an option, raising concerns Trump may seek a confrontation before the election.
