    According to a report by Reuters, on Tuesday, twelve Catalan separatist leaders went on trial in Madrid over a failed bid for independence that laid bare historical divisions and triggered Spain's largest political crisis in decades. Defendants in the politically charged trial, which is expected to last at least three months, face charges of rebellion, sedition, as well as misuse of public funds, charges which they, and their supporters, all reject. Reuters reports that supporters carried signs reading “Freedom for political prisoners” while a small rival group shouted “Golpista” or “coup plotter”, labeling the region’s independence declaration of October 2017 as an attempt to dismantle the Spanish state.

  • Spain's Supreme Court sends Catalan independence leaders to trial

    According to a report by Reuters, on Thursday, Spain's Supreme Court said that it had ended its investigation against 18 Catalan independence leaders who are expected to now face trial. Nine of those leaders are reportedly being held in prison in Spain, and are expected to be tried for rebellion, which carries a potential sentence of up to 30 years in jail.
