  • NASA to fly a helicopter on Mars

NASA says a rover it will send to Mars in 2020 will carry a helicopter to the Red Planet. If all goes according to plan, it will be the first time a helicopter flies over the surface of another planet.

  • Will NASA To Fly A Helicopter On Mars?

NASA said on Friday it will send a small helicopter to Mars as part of the U.S. space agency’s 2020 mission to place a next-generation rover on the Martian surface, marking the first time such an aircraft will be used on another world.

  • NASA's Mars Helicopter Passes Critical Flight Tests

According to a report by Gizmodo, NASA will reportedly be sending a rotary-wing aircraft to Mars, and as recently concluded flight tests have shown, this tiny helicopter is ready to become the first to fly above the surface of an alien world. In July of 2020, a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket will launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station en route to Mars carrying the tiny, four-pound helicopter. Gizmodo reports that engineers at the Mars Helicopter project at JPL in Pasadena, California, have reached an important developmental milestone, in which a model of the helicopter was put through a series of critical flight tests, and reportedly achieved controlled and sustained flight in simulated Martian conditions.

  • NASA To Send New Commands To Silent Mars Opportunity Rover

According to a report by Gizmodo, NASA's Opportunity Mars Rover has been silent for months after getting caught in an enormous dust storm on the Red Planet last summer, and NASA engineers have not heard from it since. However, NASA now says that it will send new commands to the rover in the hopes of waking it up, despite the decreasing chances of it ever becoming operational again.

  • Martian Skies To Be Explored By Nasa "Helicopter"

NASA has decided it wants a birds-eye view of Mars the next time it sends a craft there. The Mars Helicopter, a tiny remote-control dual-rotor drone, will make the trip to the red planet stowed in the belly pan of the Mars 2020 Rover. Once on the surface, the six-wheeled rover will deploy the small chopper in a suitable location. This will allow it to charge its batteries and run through a variety of pre-flight tests before making history in the thin Martin atmosphere. Thomas Zurbuchen of NASA said in an announcement, “The ability to see clearly what lies beyond the next hill is crucial for future explorers. We already have great views of Mars from the surface as well as from orbit. With the added dimension of a bird’s-eye view from a ‘marscopter,’ we can only imagine what future missions will achieve.”
