Trump Denies Conflict With Foreign Policy Advisors Over Iran Policy

Description

According to a report by Reuters, on Friday, US President Donald Trump denied friction with his foreign policy advisors on Iran, giving statements of support to White House national security advisor John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. On Thursday, US officials claimed that Trump told advisors, including Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, that he did not want to go to war with Iran. While speaking at a realtor's convention in Washington, Trump said, "They (the news media) put out messages that I’m angry with my people. I’m not angry with my people. I make my own decisions. Mike Pompeo is doing a great job. Bolton is doing a great job.”

While the nations are US President Donald Trump's most frequent foreign-policy targets, Iran has been sending oil tankers directly to Venezuela. In September, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US would place more sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Pompeo accused Maduro's government of working with Tehran 'to flout the UN arms embargo.' US officials say intervening to stop Iranian tankers from reaching Venezuela was an option, raising concerns Trump may seek a confrontation before the election.
