Bogota, Jan 18 (EFE).- Hugo Chávez, Lula da Silva, Evo Morales, Daniel Ortega, Rafael Correa and Fidel Castro are leaders in the history of Latin America who have much in common. They have inspired —and still inspire— thousands of people on the continent. They led what was called the so-called Pink Tide, a historical moment at the beginning of the 21st century where the left ruled in part of Latin America and imposed a new path to the future, moving away from the long shadow of the United States. For Will Grant, a renowned BBC's correspondent in Latin America since 2007, those years, from the rise to power of Chavez in 1999 to the death of Castro in 2016, a new way of doing politics with a strong populist component emerged and its legacy has inspired to leaders as distant and different as Jair Bolsonaro or Donald Trump. Dolly Parton is in the holiday spirit. The legendary country singer appeared on Sunday's episode of "Today" to talk about her new album, "A Holly Dolly Christmas," and "Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square," a Netflix musical. She didn't shy away from talking about the division in America. She said, "I think we've just become so divided, 'cause people just seem to love to hate," adding "But we need to carry that Christmas spirit of peace on Earth, and loving one another. We need to carry that into the new year." "A Holly Dolly Christmas" is Parton's first holiday album in 30 years, but she says that she's wanted to do one for a long time. Being on lockdown during the pandemic has given her time to write original songs and team up with friends like Miley Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon, who appear on the album. Dolly explained, "We can't save the world, but we can save the world we're living in." She added, "And Lord knows, I hope next year is better than this one."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants Americans to know: COVID-19 is nothing like the seasonal flu. According to Gizmodo, a new CDC report reveals people hospitalized with COVID-19 are over five times more likely to die than those hospitalized for influenza. Also, the risk of serious complications like pneumonia and shock is significantly higher from the novel coronavirus than from the flu. Gizmodo reports that compared to flu patients, COVID-19 sufferers are at increased risk for 17 respiratory and nonrespiratory complications. They are also 19 times more likely to develop acute respiratory distress syndrome, a life-threatening condition that fills the lungs with fluid. Heart inflammation, pneumonia, liver failure, shock, blood infections, and brain bleeds are among the other complications more likely in COVID-19 patients. COVID-19 patients also stay in the hospital longer than flu patients, taking approximately 8.6 days versus three days.
