Heathrow Airport Reveals Expansion Plan


CNN reports London's Heathrow Airport has released a new "masterplan" for its much-anticipated expansion, which will see a third runway open by 2026, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. The expansion, which has been a major point of contention in the UK for many years, got the green light from the British parliament in June 2018.

This as Conservative colleagues openly criticised Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson for missing the vote. Parliament gave its approval to the proposals on Monday evening by a majority of 415 to 119. The plan received support from almost all Conservative MPs, and a significant number of Labour MPs. The debate over the merits of expanding Heathrow has raged for over two decades. The last Labour government backed the idea. It was mothballed, however, by the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition that took power in 2010.

    According to reports, airplanes at Britain's Heathrow Airport were banned from flying over Windsor Castle during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding on Saturday for 15 minutes. The “no-fly” period was during the point when Markle approached the castle, the “big reveal” of her wedding dress and her ascent up the flights of stairs into St George’s Chapel. The closure of the airspace did not extend into the wedding service nor was it in place later in the day during various receptions and the couple’s carriage ride.

    On Wednesday a new $8.5 billion plan to expand Chicago’s O‘Hare International Airport ran into problems due to a gate dispute involving the airport’s two major carriers. American Airlines said it cannot sign a new lease needed for the project, citing a “secret provision, inserted at the last minute” that gives additional gates to United Airlines.
