Mount Vesuvius - Italy

Description

Le Vésuve - Ercolano - Italy - Europe

July 2007 When reporter Anne Maria Nicholson was inside the crater of Mt Vesuvius in Naples, she was less alarmed by the smoking fumeroles that were expelling clouds of gas around her than the ground giving away beneath her. I was there with a scientist from Naples University, Professor Benedetto de Vivo. He was so intent on pointing out the intricacies of the inside of the crater that he wasn't looking at the ground beneath him. There was an enormous drop in front of us and the ground wasn't that stable. He told me there's a lake of magma about 12 kilometres beneath us but at that point, my main concern was falling rather than the thought of a massive eruption. Nicholson and cameraman Louie Eroglu filmed the mountain from all sides, including the towns in the so-called red zone that are at risk. They say a volcano is only dangerous if there are people around it. In this case there are three million people and the major problem is that it so congested that if there is an eruption with little warning, it will be impossible for people to escape. Unfortunately, there's a major disagreement among scientists with some saying there will be several weeks warning while others say it could be as little as a day. In spite of this, the authorities have allowed lots of high rise buildings and have now given permission to build the biggest hospital in southern Italy, right in the path of the last lava flow from Vesuvius. We've looked at what might happen if there is an eruption with a pyroclastic flow like the one that killed everyone in the Roman town of Pompeii in 79 AD. It's a terrifying proposition. Italy's world-famous archeological site of Pompeii reopens to the public. The country's second most visited tourist destination after Rome's Colosseum, Pompeii lays bare nearly perfectly preserved remains of an ancient Roman city covered in volcanic ash nearly 2,000 years ago after the eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius. • Blazes on Mount Vesuvius Trigger Evacuations and Fears of Eruption

Multiple fires broke out across Mount Vesuvius near Naples on Wednesday, forcing authorities to evacuate local residents. Thick smoke billowed from several spots on the mountain, leading residents from surrounding towns and villages to falsely believe that the volcano had erupted. The fire threatens the national park surrounding the mountain, as well as adjacent landfill sites, sparking fears of toxic smoke being unleashed on nearby towns.

  • Red Hot Lava Oozes from Mount Etna as Volcano Continues to Erupt

Mount Etna continued to erupt on Tuesday, and the volcano seeped lava onto its slopes. The 10,922 ft high mountain has spewed red-hot, molten lava numerous times in the month of March and Ruptly captured spectacular footage of firy rock moving oozing from the volcano. Volcanoes form when burning lava deep below the earth's surface is pushed upwards by gases, tectonic plates, and other natural forces. Mount Etna is Europe's most active volcano and lies between the cities of Messina and Catania. Although the lava is surely a unique and magnificent site, it is extremely dangerous. The molten rock and metal reaches temperatures of between 1,300 and 2,200 Fahrenheit. Gases escaping from the lava flow can cause bubbles to form and burst, sending molten rock shooting out in different directions. Although active volcanoes are major tourist attractions, they are best appreciated from a wide distance. Ten people were reportedly injured last week when magma flowed into snow causing a violent explosion which sent stones and rocks flying across slopes according to emergency services. Tourists have been warned to remain vigilant if near the volcano.

  • Watch as Mount Etna Continues to Spit Ash and Smoke

The continuing volcanic eruption of Mount Etna on the island of Sicily could be sighted on Tuesday. The 10,922 foot high mountain has been spewing lava since Monday. Mount Etna is Europe's most active volcano and lies between the cities of Messina and Catania. The current eruption originates at the south-eastern crater and is visible from the east coast of Sicily. The last time Etna erupted was in May 2016 and, according to experts, the current eruption does not threaten nearby settlements.

  • Timelapse Captures Europe’s Largest Volcano Coming Back to Life

After having been dormant for eight months Mount Etna on the east coast of Sicily came back to life, as could been seen in timelapse footage recorded on Tuesday. Smoke was rising from the mouth of the volcano and several small strombolian explosions occurred. This is common behaviour for Mount Etna, according to volcanologist Boris Behncke at the Etnean Observatory of the INGV. Etna is Europe’s largest volcano, and among the most active on earth. It has four craters on its summit, where volcanic activity can take place continuously for several years or even decades.
