The Apple TV leaks just won’t stop: The latest on the new device, which Apple is expected to unveil at a press event in San Francisco next week, is that it won’t support 4K video playback. Omitting 4K is a bit of a mixed bag for Apple: Consumers have just started to buy 4K TVs, and there is very little 4K content available on streaming services. The new Apple TV will also offer universal search, according to multiple reports, making it possible to search for a movie or TV show across several apps.
Apple TV needs a refresh, and pronto, if new numbers from Parks Associates are to be believed. The market research outlet reported Friday that Apple TV slipped to fourth place on the list of most-sold streaming devices in 2014. That list was led by Roku, with 34% of all U.S. consumers who bought a streaming device opting either for a Roku streaming box or stick in 2014. No. 2 was Google with 23%; 14% of consumers opted for a device made by a company other than Apple, Amazon, Roku or Google.
