Amsterdam residents enjoyed the city's frozen canals over the weekend, even ice skating on their surface for the first time in years. The 'Beast from the East,' a massive cold front originating from Siberia that brought blizzards and freezing temperatures to much of Europe, had a silver lining. The subzero temperatures froze parts of Amsterdam's iconic Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals hard enough to support ice skaters.
Welcome to the Russian village of Oymyakon, one of the coldest permanently inhabited regions on earth. Yesterday, the temperature dropped to a frostbitingly cold −55 °C, or −67 °F, but that didn't stop students from going to school. Just to give a sense of how cold it gets, Oymyakon's permafrost remains frozen year-round and it's responsible for coldest officially recorded temperature in the northern hemisphere, recording −67.7 °C (−89.9 °F) on February 6, 1933.

A Russian man had a rude awakening when he found his car buried under a massive snowbank in the northern Siberian city of Norilsk on Thursday. The temperature was -31 degrees Celsius, or -23.8 degrees Fahrenheit, and heavy blizzards formed the literal mountain of snow, which completely at his auto. The car owner diligently dug for over two hours to finally free the car from the snowdrift.
A few dozen Siberian karate students filmed a video on Wednesday in Yakutsk addressed to Oscar-winning actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio, who had expressed concerns regarding the extremely cold weather in the Republic of Sakha on his Instagram. The brave bunch poured buckets of cool water over themselves while wearing only karate pants. The temperature in Yakutia in winter is between -20 and -75 degrees Fahrenheit.
