The Dark Sky Alqueva reserve in Portugal is a unique place in Europe to observe nebulae and constellations, such as Orion. It is a realm of darkness where the engineers of the SEAT Lighting team feel right at home. In the darkest areas of the planet they monitor the behaviour of other types of constellations, those that make up the headlamps and rear lights that they develop for models such as the SEAT Leon. “Here we have once again verified that the lighting we have designed for the fourth generation adapts perfectly to the road thanks to the range and width of the headlight beams and the contrast and definition of the rear lights” explains Carlos Elvira, head of Lighting and Signalling Development at SEAT.
As part of its constant commitment to innovation and to the future of the company, focused on electrification, SEAT has invested more than 30 million euros in recent years to create the most advanced powertrain test centre in southern Europe. The facilities are equipped with nine multi-energy test benches, which enable different types of tests to be carried out on internal combustion, electric, hybrid and CNG engines, with the aim of ensuring that they meet the quality, CO2 and other emissions, durability and performance requirements committed to throughout their life cycle.
The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femursof the driver and passenger. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of all critical body areas was good for the driver. However, for the rear passenger,dummy readings indicated a marginal level of protection for the chest. A penalty was also applied as a result of high shoulder belt forcesand protection of the chest was rated as poor. In the side barrier impact, all critical body areas were well protected and the car scoredmaximum points in this test. In the more severe side pole test, protection of the chest was adequate and that of other body areas wasgood. However, the side door of the car became detached during the test and the score was penalised for the risk of occupant ejection.Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. Ageometric assessment of the rear seats indicated marginal whiplash protection. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking (AEB)system performed adequately in tests of its functionality at the low speeds at which many whiplash injuries occur.
