Facebook has shut down about 30,000 fake accounts that were tied to France, citing deceptive content and misinformation, ahead of the country's presidential election this month. Facebook has revealed ramped up efforts to stop the spread of fake news, hoaxes, and spam through fake accounts, which "enabled (them) to take action" against the French accounts.Facebook says that it will focus on the "worst of the worst" offenders and will partner with outside fact-checkers and news organizations to sort honest news reports from made-up stories.
Facebook suspended five accounts for spreading misleading information during Alabama’s special election in 2017. A Facebook spokesperson said they were running “engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior.” The spokesperson said they “stand against people or organization that create networks of accounts to mislead others.” According to Business Insider, one of those accounts included CEO of social media research firm New Knowledge.
Social media giant Facebook has shut down 583 million fake accounts. Facebook also increased its moderation of spam. It took action on 837m pieces of spam. Facebook also moderated 2.5m pieces of hate speech, 1.9m pieces of terrorist propaganda... 3.4m pieces of graphic violence and 21m pieces of content featuring adult nudity and sexual activity. The move comes after increased criticism of Facebook's handling of spam and illicit content.

In the first three months of 2019, Facebook banned a staggering 2.2 billion fake accounts. This information was provided in the tech giant's third edition of its Community Standards Enforcement report. Facebook's VP of Integrity also issued a statement saying, "The amount of accounts we took action on increased due to automated attacks by bad actors who attempt to create large volumes of accounts at one time.
