Hundreds of Iraqi children from the Yazidi ethnic minority were forcefully recruited or enslaved by the Islamic State group. One French NGO is now trying to help these children gradually overcome their trauma. EliseCare operates a mission in northern Iraq, where children are encouraged to draw pictures as part of their therapy. Displaced Iraqis who fled the towns of Hit and Kubaysa after Iraqi forces launched a broad offensive to retake the cities from the Islamic State (IS) group in the western province of Anbar, and who are now staying in refugee camps, tell of the their former life under IS rule, with children recounting forced trainings and special school programmes.
One year on from the Taliban's stunning return to power, Afghanistan is in crisis. With national reserves frozen in foreign banks and the Taliban struggling to morph from an insurgency to administrative force, the country is now home to what the United Nations calls the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Those with the means –- and many without –- have fled the country, or are desperate to leave. Some in the country are relieved by the overall decrease in violence, while others have found their lives shattered. No country has officially recognised the new government.
