Brexit revives Argentina's hope of claiming sovereignity of Falkland Islands

Description

Buenos Aires, Feb 17 (EFE) .- The United Kingdom's exit from the European Union (EU), better known as Brexit, has many implications around the world, and one of them is the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, held by Britain and disputed by Argentina, which sees an opportunity in the split.(CAMERA: José Manuel Rodríguez, Julieta Barrera and Aitor Pereira)FOOTAGE AND IMAGES OF ARGENTINA'S SECRETARY FOR MATTERS RELATING TO THE FALKLAND ISLANDS, DANIEL FILMUS, AND OF THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR IN ARGENTINA, MARK KENT, AND OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS WAR VETERAN JORGE COSENTINO.TRANSLATEDANIEL FILMUS: 1. "We hope that the European countries in this situation in which there is a new commitment (between the EU and the UK) that they understand in more depth the Argentine position and support the idea that the United Kingdom has to dialogue, that there is no way it can postpone that dialogue" 2. "We know that Brexit represents a relevant economic concern for the Falkland Islands because almost all of their production goes to Europe and is no longer going to be a European production, which means that they will heavily rely on the agreements reached so that they can enter with or without customs duties, mainly fishery production" MARK KENT: 1. "We are clear in our position that (we support) the self-determination of the people who live there, and that will not change with Brexit, our Prime Minister has made it very clear that we continue to support the self-determination right of the people who live there" 2. "We have a good relationship with Daniel Filmus, and we are in talks about how we are going to continue with the humanitarian project, with the identification of the fallen Argentine soldiers, and we are going to continue talking about common ground subjects such as fishing, for example, but we made it clear that sovereignty is not on the table" JORGE COSENTINO: "They are not the population of the Falkland Islands, they are guys who 150 years ago expelled the Argentines who were there by force and who stayed there, but they are usurpers anyway"
