The second generation of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé also makes its mark in fine style with noticeably enhanced driving dynamics, a sharper design in the brand’s new design language, a refined premium ambience in the cabin and a wide array of innovations in the areas of control/operation and connectivity. Five model variants will be available from launch, developing between 135 kW/184 hp and 275 kW/374 hp.
The 68th IAA Cars show in Frankfurt is the venue for the unveiling of the BMW Concept 4 – a future-focused interpretation of the BMW Group’s enduring DNA that represents the magic of coupe driving at its most exciting.The BMW Concept 4 hovers close to the road. The distinctive kidney grille, remarkable air intakes and prominently sculpted surfaces provide an immediate advert for the car’s performance and its engaging character as a driver’s car.Grabbing the attention at the heart of the front end is the vertical kidney grille. “The kidney grille has always been a signature feature of BMW cars,” reflects Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. “The BMW Concept 4 presents a confident and classy take on this iconic feature. At the same time, the BMW Concept 4 offers a look ahead to the expressive face of the 4 Series range.” The vertically oriented grille fits seamlessly into both the proportions of the front end and BMW’s illustrious past. Indeed, its form and design reference legendary classics such as the BMW 328 or the BMW 3.0 CSi and therefore shine the spotlight on the BMW brand’s long and successful history as a maker of fine coupes.
When it comes to the premium segment of the midsize class, the number 4 stands for the perfect combination of driving pleasure and elegantly sporty design. These have been hallmark brand values of BMW since its earliest days, and the new BMW 4 Series Coupé and new BMW 4 Series Convertible embody them even more intently than ever. The precisely modified exterior design of the two models underscores their dynamic character and exclusive style. Modern touches and new equipment features bring a premium ambience of renewed sophistication to the interior. Here, the cutting-edge cockpit design, including the BMW Curved Display, provides the ideal stage for the latest evolution of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, which is based on the new BMW Operating System 8.5.New exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels, headlights with an extremely striking design for the light sources and the now optionally available Laserlight rear lights mark out the latest advances in the exterior of the two models. Alongside the introduction of the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect as standard, customers can now also choose to add an Augmented View display for the BMW Maps navigation system as an option on their new BMW 4 Series.

Inside the cabin, the larger central touchscreen display immediately catches the eye. The straightforward method of individually configuring and selecting various driving modes via two buttons in the centre console has been adopted from the BMW M8.In the BMW M5, the 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology generates 441 kW/600 hp, while in the BMW M5 Competition the high-revving unit produces 460 kW/625 hp. Credit for negotiating the dynamic tightrope between full everyday usability on the one hand and driving pleasure and exceptional track performance on the other goes to the M xDrive system and its centralised intelligent control approach for the Active M Differential. As an alternative to variable all-wheel-drive mode (4WD) with its rear-biased baseline setup, handling characteristics can be altered by varying degrees up to 2WD mode. This pure rear-wheel drive setting without DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) treats accomplished drivers to completely unadulterated driving pleasure.

The new BMW 4 Series Coupé, which celebrated its digital world premiere today, is a truly exceptional car that redefines the essence of driving pleasure in the premium midsize segment. The online presentation of the sporty two-door model offered a wide-ranging insight into the vehicle concept and its fascinating history, as well as the car’s distinctive design and freshly honed dynamics. The evolution of the two-door car’s aesthetic in keeping with BMW’s new styling language is particularly evident under the design studio spotlights. Here, Domagoj Dukec explained the design process that went into creating the sporty, graceful and exclusive aura of the new BMW 4 Series Coupé. The focus here was on standalone design features, notably the large, upright BMW kidney grille angling forward at the front end of the coupé, the athletically sculpted shoulders above the rear wheel arches, the car’s dynamically stretched proportions and its wide tracks. These elements put clear water between the new car and the latest BMW 3 Series Sedan, while also giving it a significantly sharper character than its predecessor. “The new BMW 4 Series displays the signature BMW proportions in their most modern form yet,” said Dukec. “The front end makes a very clear statement on the road. The striking, vertical kidney grille and iconic twin headlights create a bold and confident identity.”
