Pedri: I always try to learn from Messi

Description

ports Desk, Nov 12 (EFE), (Camera: Oscar Maya Belchi).- Pedro ‘Pedri’ González is just 17 but is already one of the pillars of the Spain U-21 team and an emerging sensation for Ronald Koeman’s FC Barcelona. He sat down for an interview — via videolink — with Efe, in which he praised the role of Barça captain Lionel Messi, confessed that he is still UD Las Palmas’ number one fan and acknowledged that his challenge was to avoid comparisons with other players and carve out a name for himself in the sport. SOUNDBITES OF BARÇA PLAYER PEDRI DURING AN INTERVIEW WITH EFE:"At the moment it’s great. It’s a really nice feeling, although you are far away from the people close to you and that love you, I’m doing what I love, which is playing football, and I’m enjoying it.""I feel really happy to have the reward of being here and enjoy my colleagues, who are great people, and I’m pleased I’m able to give everything I can to the team.""It’s always a source of pride when they compare you to other players, but I have to be Pedro, make my own career. People have likened me to Iniesta or Laudrup. You can learn from those players, but you have to be yourself and shape your own career.""First I have to be happy to have got to where I am, which is already a reward. Hopefully, I’ll get the opportunity one day to be in the first team, it’s a dream that all kids have.""When I arrived (in Barcelona) I had just finished playing a season in the Second Division, in Las Palmas. I didn’t have as much experience as other players but I arrived to do the best I could and try to keep myself there with work and effort. I’m proud of what I’m achieving and what I have to do is keep working to get as many minutes as possible.""I saw it, yes, but not that exact one. I always watch the match again to see where I failed, most of all. I focus more where I fail than what I get right. I think that’s the best way to get better every day.""From day one he told me I needed to work for it, because it was very difficult to be at Barça and I think that I’ve worked well and I’ve shown him that I can be here and he’s placed his confidence in me by putting me on important games. I have to be thankful to him and keep working for more minutes.""It made me really happy, most of all I was really eager to play in it. The Clasico is a dream every kid has from a very young age watching it on the TV. I had the fortune to achieve that dream, and for that I am really grateful to Koeman and my teammates for making it so easy for me.""I think like everyone, a little stunned to see him (Leo Messi) in person. But after a few days (you realize) he’s just a normal person, like a friend in the locker room. It’s great to be able to play matches with him and to learn from him in training.""Great at the moment. He always gives you advice on the pitch, which is what I believe a captain has and what he is like, he knows a lot about what he talks about, for everything he has won and done in football. Messi giving you advice is a point of pride and I always try to listen to him and learn from him, as it will be really useful for me.""No, not yet, but I want to ask for one in the future because I think it is a souvenir that everyone in the world would want to have.""Yes, whenever I can I watch the games on the TV and I support them because it’s thanks to Las Palmas that I’m here. They gave me a lot of confidence and I was able to play in the Second Division, a really difficult league and I’m grateful for that."

  • Interview with Cesc Fabregas: "I want to coach at the highest level"

La Turbie, France, Sep 28 (EFE).- At the tailend of a glittering professional career, Cesc Fábregas, one of the best European midfielders this century, is now a role model for the youngsters at AS Monaco. But as his playing career winds down, he is keeping one eye on his future after he hangs his boots up. “(In five years) I see myself coaching. I want to do it at the highest level,” the 34-year-old told Efe during an interview at the Ligue 1 club’s new training center, located on the outskirts of the luxurious city-state. A product of FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth academy and winner of the World Cup and European Championships with Spain, the former Arsenal and Chelsea star discussed Barça’s current challenges, his friend Lionel Messi’s arrival at Ligue 1 rivals Paris Saint-Germain and his role at AS Monaco. Question: How are you getting along with such a young squad like AS Monaco’s (with an average age of 24.3 years)?Answer: I am delighted to be here. I feel the love they have for me, and I feel the same way. I still see myself playing on for a while, but it is true that I have a slightly different role, on and off the pitch.Q: You’ve been at Monaco, one of France’s biggest clubs which is recovering from a turbulent period, for two and a half years.A: Last year we made a lot of progress (the team finished third in the league under new manager, former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac). This year we have not started well (the team has already been knocked out of the Champions League) but, little by little, we are on a winning path again. We are excited by the Europa League.Q: Were you surprised by how Messi left Barca?A: In football, everything can change in a matter of seconds. It was his turn this time, it’s happened to me many times. They are moments in life that you have to overcome in the best way possible. Leo is a super strong guy, very competitive. He will not have problems adjusting.Q: Several world class players have left Barcelona in similarly unexpected circumstances. What is happening at the club?A: Messi’s situation occurred during a period of instability at the club, but in the end, he will be seen as the best player in Barcelona’s history, and this will not change that. When he retires, he can have another farewell. Club legends should depart in a way that they deserve, that recognises what they have given to the club and the sport.Q: Seven years after your departure, how do you look back on those three seasons you spent at Barcelona (from 2011 to 2014)?A: It was a great experience. In the end, for one reason or another, lots of things can change in seconds. I have always been pretty independent, I left Barcelona at 15 years old. I did not need to be protected to know what I wanted. Changing scenery was never an issue for me.Q: Barcelona finally achieved a convincing result at the weekend (beating Levante 3-0). What do you make of the new generation of young talent coming out of La Masia?A: To foster a young talent, you need to give him opportunities. I am convinced that Spain has lots of talented young players who don’t get their chance to shine. Football is very impatient. However, I had (Arsene) Wenger, who played me when I was just 16 years old (...) In a normal situation, Barcelona would not have done that. Now, they are playing Gavi, who is 17, Nico (Gonzalez), Pedri, Puig (...) They are players who are carrying the load for a massive club going through turbulent times.Q: Which of them is your favorite?A: It’s not about who I like more or less, but we can see that Gavi has a lot of self-confidence that is unusual for someone his age. He is tireless, he is aggressive, you can see he wants to learn and do things the right way. If they continue like that, the future looks very bright.Q: The only trophy missing from your haul is the Champions League, which you almost won in 2006 with Arsenal, when they lost to Barcelona in the final.A: Name any final -- I have played in all of them. Even though I lost the Champions League final, I can say I played in one. I remember (in the 2006 final) that they took me off when we were leading 1-0. Thierry Henry had the chance to make it 2-0 in a one-on-one with Victor Valdes. I came off the pitch as a European champion, but then Samuel Eto’o equalised -- from an offside position. And then Belletti and Larson linked up on the wing to make it 2-1.Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?A: Retired from playing, and I see myself coaching. I want to do it at the highest level. I want to prepare myself really well. I don’t want to make the mistake of starting to coach from scratch at a big club. Creating your own style and approach takes time, although I think it’s obvious from my playing style what kind of manager I would like to become.Q: Who do you think have been the most important coaches in the last 20 years?A: Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti. Those are the three that come to mind. Q: Two of them have been your manager (Guardiola at Barcelona and Mourinho at Chelsea).A: I have been very lucky to be coached by the best and to play with the best.Q: You are also a legend at international level. What moments do you treasure most?A: Celebrations in Madrid that had never been seen before, and not only once, but three times (for the European Championships in 2008 and 2012, and the World Cup in 2010). On the pitch, my penalty in the shootout against Italy in the quarterfinals, my assist to (Andres) Iniesta for the goal in the World Cup final in 2010; another I provided for David Silva in final against Italy in 2012; and my penalty in the shootout against Portugal (in the semifinal in 2012).FOOTAGE AND SOUNDBITES FROM CESC FÁBREGAS, A MONACO PLAYER, FROM THE HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTER OF AS MONACO IN LA TURBIE, FRANCE.
