Democracy protests reignite in Hong Kong after China passes security legislation

Description

Hong Kong, May 29 (EFE/EPA).- Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters on Friday held lunchtime demonstrations in shopping malls in the semi-autonomous city after China's National People's Congress on Thursday almost unanimously approved the controversial national security bill. China’s NPC approved a decision to go forward with national security legislation for Hong Kong that democracy activists in Hong Kong and some Western countries fear could crush the city’s autonomy and jeopardize its role as a global financial hub.The bill was passed during the closing session of the annual gathering of the NPC, and will now be handed over to a legal committee of the national legislature which will be tasked with preparing a final draft, to be ratified by the standing committee of the NPC.The draft decision was passed with 2,878 to 1 votes in favor and six abstentions. The bill is meant to crack down on dissent, subversion and treason against the Chinese government.
