Vatican City, Sep 25 (EFE), (Camera: Álvaro Padilla).- Italian Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, forced by Pope Francis to resign, defended himself on Friday during in a press conference against the accusations of siphoning off funds to help his siblings.SOUNDBITES OF CARDINAL GIOVANNI ANGELO BECCIU:1.- "It is true that I have allocated money to Caritas. These 100,000 euros. It is a duty of the substitute for the Secretary of State. In 7-8 years I had never supported Sardinia (his native region). I know that in my diocese there is an emergency, especially due to unemployment and I wanted to allocate that money to Caritas. That money is still there. I hope that sooner or later, the pope realizes that it is a mistake."2.- "He informed that he had to present his resignation and renounce his cardinal rights, including participating in a conclave."
