Exhibition with burnt wood furniture to raise awareness on Portugal fires

Description

Lisbon, Oct 17 (EFE) .- (Camera: Paula Fernández) In 2017, fires took the lives of more than a hundred people and destroyed 440,000 hectares in Portugal. Now, wood burned in those fires has been turned into display furniture to warn of an environmental tragedy that continues to destroy the Portuguese forests every year.FOOTAGE OF THE EXHIBITION.SOUNDBITES OF ANGELA MORGADO, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ANP / WWF.Translation:1.- "The base of the pieces is burned wood that comes from the regions most affected by the fires of 2017. Obviously, in the execution, he had to use another type of wood, but that was the basic idea."2.- "Portugal has been one of the most affected countries, mainly in 2017. In addition to many hectares of forest and many losses in environmental terms and biodiversity, many lives were lost in Portugal, something that had never happened before, with fires of this size."3.- "On the one hand, one of the things that are lacking is prevention, which is to bet on sustainable forest management, on mosaic landscapes, which combines production forests with agriculture, with pastures ... The more diverse the activities in a certain place, the more resilient that landscape becomes to fire. If we have populations of only one species, without corridors, with nothing, logically it is easier for fires to spread."4.- "I think that no one is indifferent to this exhibition. It is very beautiful, it is the right space for this exhibition. I think that the pieces here gained a much more interesting symbolic dimension. And I think that art and culture have to do with the environment and with heritage. We cannot forget that there is a lot of art inspired by nature. "
