Interview with Belenguer, president of Portugal's CD Tondela

Description

Lisbon (Portugal), Oct 22 (EFE), (Camera: Carlos García).- Former Spanish soccer player David Belenguer, who retired in 2011 after playing for clubs such as Betis and Getafe, is president of the Portuguese club Tondela. In an interview with EFE, he assures that his crusade involves instilling ambition within a modest club that is committed to youth development, while recognizing his "weakness" for Uruguayan players.FOOTAGE OF STATEMENTS BY FORMER SPANISH SOCCER PLAYER DAVID BELENGUER TRANSLATONS:Question: How did the project come about?Answer: It was born when I was looking at options for an investment group and in the end they opted for other options. A very good friendship was born there with the president of the club, Gilberto Coimbra, and I saw the possibility of being the one to take that step, because the Tondela met all the conditions. I decided to do it with the support of that management company, although later that company disappeared and the link we had with it is no longer operational. Let's hope that we are able to make as few mistakes as possible and that we take Tondela to the quieter area of the classification, gaining more peace of mind in a more long-term project. It is a company of mine, I am the owner.Q: How has Tondela evolved in this time?A: When we got involved in this project it was to do our bit. I focus on the structural part, on being able to build a good structure, a good environment to have options for growth. That's the way I think this industry should move. With good facilities, with good working conditions, without that you cannot grow. A good sports city will be the next step of the Tondela. And from there, with good managers, it is possible to consider growth. Without that you can grow in the short term, but you have an expiration date, for sure.Q: Talk about the evolution of the clubA: There is a growth in wealth, in the quality of assets, with players owned, not leased. Rights over players. A capacity of growth that you didn't have before, because decisions were made to survive, to stay in the first division. But there was no growth in assets and the benefit was taken by others and the risk was assumed by Tondela. And today we are changing all that.Q: Talk about the staffA: We have consistent and, above all, very dynamic staff, with a lot of energy and one main characteristic: ambition; it's a crusade of mine, to instil ambition within the club, while remaining humble. We are capable of fighting against anyone, whoever it may be, Benfica, Porto, Sporting or Manchester United will never take the field thinking they have a chance. We instill it from above to the last of the employees to change that mentality of the club of interior, very poor and that we like everyone.Q: Talk Spaniard Pako Ayestarán, the bet for a coachA: Pako has the capacity to demand. It is one of the guidelines that I have missed in Tondela. I don't want to say that the coaches who have come or the insoles are not demanding, but I have missed that they are all demanding from the first day of training because you don't have to leave everything to the end when you have water rising to your neck.Q: Talk about the scoresA: I think we have paid a high price for a decision that was made in the middle of the staff construction phase. We decided to take risks and bring in the players we wanted from the beginning. We have very high expectations, because of the performance and competitiveness that they are going to put into the squad and others are going to improve because of the competition that we have created for them. We thought about making a team and improving what we haveQ: Talk Uruguayan defender Enzo MartinezA: It was very difficult to bring him, to tell you the truth at some point I thought we would not bring him. He was in the fight for the Copa Libertadores. It gives us a type of player that we didn't have. The Uruguayan player is my weakness, I have to admit. Put a Uruguayan defender in my life and I'm happy. I like to have good kids who are capable of transforming themselves on the field.Q: Candidacy for the 2030 World Cup organized by Spain and PortugalA: It would be an honor. I think it would help a lot to unite the two peoples. When we mix we are many more equal than it seems. It is one of the things that would make me more excited. It would help to unite Spaniards and Portuguese, we have a lot in common. When we look at each other's faces we are very similar and we complement each other very well. It would be a very powerful candidacy.

  • Interview with former Argentina president Macri

Madrid, July 10 (EFE).- (Camera: Jesús Bartolomé) .- The former president of Argentina Mauricio Macri denied on Saturday having sent "lethal" ammunition to Bolivia to suppress the social protests that took place in the Andean country in November 2019 against the government of Evo Morales.INTERVIEW WITH MACRI.TRANSLATION:"The European Union and the OAS say it was an institutional crisis product of the fraudulent intent from Evo Morales, who mobilized the people in the streets, got scared and then stepped down. In that institutional crisis, the European Union asked the Bolivian congress to work within the constitutional frames to get out of that crisis. The congress chose an interim president tasked to call elections as soon as possible, which she did, and she did it so transparently that Evo Morales' party once again won but without Evo Morales." "The European Union does not accept that as a coup. My government in Argentina didn't either." "The things (they say we sent) are antiriot, not war material. My minister informed me that they travelled, with Morales already out of power, with the process in congress to pick an interim president, to defend the Argentinian embassy in Bolivia, where a couple of Evo Morales' workers were taking refuge, who had to leave the country for Argentina. I had already lost the election by then, so it was carried out in coordination with the incoming government."

  • Interview with former Yugoslav president Stjepan Mesic

Zagreb (Croatia), Jun 23 (EFE / EPA) .- (Camera: Antonio Bat) Just 30 years ago, Slovenia and Croatia declared their independence from Yugoslavia, marking the beginning of the bloody disintegration of the country that lasted for a decade and four civil and inter-ethnic wars.In an interview with Efe, the last president of Yugoslavia, Croatian Stjepan Mesic, recalls how in 1991 an agreement was not possible between the different regions that made up Yugoslavia. FOOTAGE AND SOUNDBITES OF MESIC "As prime minister of Croatia I went first to be a member of the presidency of Yugoslavia, first as vice president, and then later as president - that was a traditional regulation, that rotation, the vice president is the one who becomes the next president, that was not voted on, that was only something that was registered. Whoever was vice president later became the president, and so on in rotation. All that always worked like that, until I came, and then Serbia opposed. But despite this, and only by will and the indication of the European Community, they accepted it, in the end they recognized it, it was only a few months, until the end of the year. " "But despite that brevity there were many events. With my arrival to the presidency of Yugoslavia, I was fully aware of how the situation was: in short, everything was tied, obstructed. All federal institutions were in lockdown, including the presidency Also the Supreme Court, and the Constitutional Court, everything. And I said, in this format, this model, I will be the last president of Yugoslavia. That is, we have to reach a political agreement. based on three integrative factors: Tito, with his charisma of a man who had won the war and of a great statesman after World War II. Second, there was the party, and third, the Army. Tito left the scenarios of life and of the politician, the party disintegrated because of Milosevic - the then head of Serbia, and the Army found a new tutor. I said, upon reaching the presidency, we have to reach a new political agreement . We no longer had the integrative factor of yesteryear, Tito, so now we have to look for something new. But Serbia wanted neither the federation nor the confederation. I proposed a confederation for a period of three-five-eight years, how long we could agree, and then see what to do. All constituent elements would proclaim their independence and sign a confederal agreement. But no proposal was accepted, as Milosevic, who was actually the main culprit, Slobodan Milosevic, the then president of Serbia, his regime, they were against any proposed federal or confederal political agreement. What interested them only was Greater Serbia. Meanwhile, Milosevic was deceiving the world, that he wanted to preserve Yugoslavia, in which the world was interested. The world was sentimental about Yugoslavia, since that was the main factor that had organized the Non-Aligned Movement, through which, in the cold war, the East and the West communicated, and Tito played the role in this. principal. Now, without Tito, that same model could not be preserved, and it was urgent to reach a new political agreement. But Serbia did not want it: that is, it deceives the world on the one hand that it is fighting for Yugoslavia, and it deceives the Serbs on the other that they are going to live in a state. Milosevic never promised the Serbs a Greater Serbia out loud, but told them that they would live in a state. But the policy was: you must bring the dowry: bring the territories, and that is how you are going to live in a State, that is, that was their policy. " "Yes, with the changes in Kosovo and Vojvodina, he (Milosevic) had already destroyed an indispensable pillar of equal rights in the federation, since the regions were one of its constituent elements. He simply annihilated those autonomies." "No, they did not violate the Constitution. The Constitution of Yugoslavia, of 1974, defined the republics as states, that by their will entered the federation, and that by their will they could leave it. That is, that was how it was. defined by the federal Constitution. That is why we had proposed the confederation as a possible peaceful solution, and then see, if things go well, we could continue like this, but Milosevic did not want anything, and all that pushed Croatia and Slovenia, and then to others also, to seek their independence, based on the Constitution."

  • Interview with former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Tehran, May 24 (EFE) .- (Camera: Marina Villén) Former conservative Iranian president Mahmud Ahmadinejad assures in an interview with Efe that participation in the next elections will be "very low" if his candidacy is rejected and he advocates for a better distribution of wealth to "regain the confidence" of the population lost in the theocratic system.SOUNDBITES OF MAHMUD AHMADINEYAD FORMER IRANIAN CONSERVATIVE PRESIDENT. **RESTRICTIONS: NO ACCESS ISRAEL MEDIA/PERSIAN LANGUAGE TV STATIONS OUTSIDE IRAN/STRICTLY NO ACCESS BBC PERSIAN/VOA PERSIAN/MANOTO-1 TV/IRAN INTERNATIONAL** "It is clear. At the moment, if I am rejected, the participants will be very low and it is not possible to foresee in a certain way who will win.""My decision is again based on the request of the people. In recent years, especially in the last year and especially in recent months, there has been a lot of pressure on me from different sectors of the population, from different parts of the world, to present my candidacy""The concentration of wealth and power is a source of corruption, the weakening of the people, and inefficiency in the economy. Now, more than 85 percent of the country's economy is at the disposal of the government and the institutions of the system.""The distrust has become generalized, people distrust so much the governor of a village even the whole system. That does not mean that the whole system is guilty of creating such situation, but it is clear that when a problem occurs and the system does not have an adequate reaction, distrust among people is spread everywhere "."From my point of view, the JCPOA (nuclear pact) is finished and the reason is that it has not been regulated according to the norms of international law. It is a unilateral contract, and a unilateral contract has no chance of surviving ".

  • Interview with Ecuador's president Lenín Moreno

Quito, Jan 25 (EFE), (Camera: Juan Francisco Chávez).- Less than two weeks before elections in Ecuador, the country's president, Lenín Moreno, continues to keep his distance from the electoral process and assures he will transfer the government with its "accounts in order" and not as an "ambush" like the one he claims he inherited from his predecessor in 2017.SOUNDBITES OF ECUADOR'S PRESIDENT LENIN MORENO:"We found a country that was said to be prepared and it was not true, it was not real.""The president insisted, he told me we had to keep the revolution project he had already started and, to be honest, I trusted his words. I even believed the situation in which he said he left the country was real. But it was not.""From the beginning of my term and even before I said I would respect (democratic) institutionality, that I would not interfere in the judiciary power as the previous government had done and that I would respect the autonomy and independence of powers. ""If they want to investigate me, they are more than welcome. What I truly recommend is not to break (democratic) institutionality, not to interfere in the judiciary so we can keep believing in it because there is nothing more frustrating for a human being that not trusting (democratic) institutionality."
