Fear of Covid-19 spreads to isolated communities in Brazil's Amazon

Description

Communities in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon have until now been spared the effects of COVID-19, but in the municipality of Carauari, residents are worried that they will not be able to survive after a government decision to filter passenger arrivals to the village, which is reached only by boat thus limiting its access to goods.

Manaus (Brazil), Jan 28 (EFE).- (Camera: Raphael Alves) Ilton Alves has been fighting Covid-19 in the Amazon for more than ten days. He had to pay for the oxygen out of his pocket. Neither his private health insurance nor the public service has treated him. They are collapsed. It is the dramatic reality of the Brazilian state most affected by the pandemic.FOOTAGE OF ILTON AND HIS WIFE ADJANIR.SOUNDBITES AND TRANSLATION OF:Adjanir:"At 58 years old I never thought I would go through everything I'm going through. Seeing my husband sick, without a hospital to take care of him, without having an emergency care, if a life or death situation happens, I have nowhere to go and I have to work to pay the bills and at the expense of getting sick too." Ilton:"I never imagined that I would need oxygen at home, because we have health insurance. The last time I went to the hospital they didn't see me because the hospital was closed. The security guard said it was closed and there would be no service at all. I was sad because we paid health insurance and yet nothing happened at the time. There was no need to hospitalize, but at least to tend to patients, prescribe medications. I went home discouraged."

Brasilia, Oct 15 (EFE) .- An association of victims Friday placed 600 white flags in front of the Brazilian Congress, in Brasilia, in memory of the more than 600,000 Covid-19 related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. The symbolic act was organized by the Association of Victims and Family Members of Covid Victims (Avico), created in April this year with the aim of putting pressure on the Government of President Jair Bolsonaro, who has consistently diminished the seriousness of the health crisis.(Camera: ALEX MIRKHAN)SHOT LIST: WHITE FLAGS PLACED IN FRONT OF THE BRAZILIAN CONGRESS IN BRASILIA, BRAZIL. SOUND BITES:Antonieta Alves, volunteer:"This act represents a large part of the pain of each of these families and our outrage at the government's contempt for these victims, because today 600,000 have been trivialized. 600,000 no longer means anything, you know? It's as if we hadn't started to die. The government does not take things into consideration and the people trivialize these 600 thousand. The families that lost their relatives and friends felt it. We feel that each one of these exceeds 600 thousand. "Carla Marcia Davi, volunteer:"We could have a health (policy) that would reduce deaths in the country, but unfortunately our government is negligent, it does not contribute with vaccines, to our public health. We are in a very difficult moment in our country, of mourning, abandonment and total poverty. "
