Protesters gather to oppose nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett

A group of protesters gathers outside the Dirksen Senate Building in Washington, DC to oppose the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, President Donald Trump's conservative nominee, to the Supreme Court. As the hearing got underway, Capitol Police proceeded to the arrest of some of the demonstrators. IMAGES

  • Dems Blast Sen. Lindsay Graham For Refusing To Be Tested For COVID-19

    Democratic senators are fuming over Republican South Carolina Senator Judge Lindsay Graham's refusal to take a COVID-19 test. Democratic Judiciary Committee senators warned him not to proceed with the Supreme Court nomination hearing next week for Judge Amy Coney Barrett. According to Business Insider, the letter said in part, 'We need not proceed in such a reckless and blind fashion.' Graham's decision threatened to scuttle the debate with Democratic opponent Jamie Harrison. Harrison said he would not debate in Graham in person if the incumbent did not get tested.

  • Pennsylvania, Texas, And Minnesota To 'Segregate' Some Votes

    In PA, MN, and TX, federal judges have ordered election officials to "segregate" certain ballots. The vote-by-mail ballots that arrive late are being set aside in case another court invalidates them. Around 127,000 votes that were cast at drive-thru locations in TX during the early voting period. Those ballots have been specially marked for the same reason, says Business Insider. All of these court orders came after extensive litigation and it's not clear how many votes are at risk.

    Amy Coney Barrett has a history of supporting anti-choice groups. These groups believe in fetal personhood, according to Business Insider. Legislation that recognizes embryos as legal persons would complicate standard procedures involved in IVF. This includes freezing embryos, performing genetic testing, and discarding unused embryos. This could create new criminality if personhood bills were to be passed. If Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed, the implications for reproductive rights will extend far beyond birth control.
