Renowned Russian adventurer and Orthodox priest Fyodor Konyukhov set a new world record when he successfully landed with his crew in his hot air balloon near Saratov on Thursday, after flying the balloon for more than 55 hours. The record-breaking voyage began on February 7 in the city of Rybinsk and covered a total distance of 640 miles across Russia. During the flight, the balloon reached the height of between 620 and 980 feet, flying at a speed of between 6 and 25 miles per hour. The endurance trip took the crew over many of Russian Orthodoxy's best known landmarks and churches. Konyukhov's flight exceeded the previous world record for a non-stop flight in a 9 000 to 12 000 m³ category hot air balloon, which was set by Japanese pilots Hirazuki Takezava and Michio Kanda in 1997, by more than four hours.
Whistleblower and former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden claimed political asylum in Russia in 2013. Now, Gizmodo reports Snowden and his wife, Lindsay Mills, have obtained permanent residence there. What's more, they're seeking dual citizenship with Russia and the United States. In a tweet, Snowden said the move was to ensure the safety of his and Mills' yet-unborn son. Snowden leaked a trove of classified NSA secrets to journalists, which led to him being charged with multiple felonies under the Espionage Act. However, Russia does not have an extradition agreement with the US. No one becomes a whistleblower because they want to. No one becomes a whistleblower because it has a happy ending.
