Finland's former president and Nobel laureate Martti Ahtisaari is laid to rest in a state funeral held in the Nordic country's capital Helsinki. Ahtisaari died at the age of 86 in October after battling Alzheimer's disease. Serving as president from 1994 to 2000, Ahtisaari was also a mediator who negotiated an end to conflicts around the globe, from Indonesia to Kosovo and Namibia. His formidable career, which spanned over 40 years, earned him worldwide recognition and a Nobel Peace Prize in 2008. IMAGES
Mikhail Gorbachev's coffin, surrounded by a procession and Guard of honour, is carried to his grave in the prestigious Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
