Video shows British animal rescue group workers rappelling 100 metres to save the animal
Heavy rains have caused flooding in the east of Spain. In the Castelló province, firefighters rescued people trapped in their cars. The Spanish state meteorological agency (AEMET) has announced a risk alert for almost half of the country, including a red alert around Madrid, where citizens have received an emergency message to their mobile phones advising them to stay at home. A Russian sailor travelling solo from Stockholm to Spain was shipwrecked on a tiny bit of rock near the remote Swedish island of Stora Lundskar in the Baltic Sea last week, losing all his communication equipment in the accident. The unnamed Russian man wrote the word HELP in moss which he collected from the island in the hope that a passing aircraft might see it. A helicopter patrol saw the letters and brought to a nearby hospital in Linkoping for treatment.
Volunteers helped residents of Houston's flooded Kingwood neighbourhood and their pets to safety as waters continue to rise. Due to the lack of police and fire department boats, some civilians used their personal boats to rescue fellow residents to help them leave the Kingwood neighbourhood, which is reportedly one of the most affected neighbourhoods in the area.
A Russian family made an unexpected discovery on their way home from a fishing trip in Arkhangelsk, as shown in footage that emerged on Monday. Ludmila Janushko and her husband spotted what looked like a small animal at the side of the road and pulled over to check on it. On closer inspection, the ball of fur turned out to be a young seal pup stranded on land.
