Bumpy buffalo race celebrates start of rice harvest in Thailand

Hundreds of people flocked to Chonburi, near Bangkok to watch and take part in the annual Chonburi Buffalo Race. The festival highlight is the buffalo race on the final two days, which sees racers compete in a 100-metre sprint. Among the festival's other events are 'the most beautiful buffalo wear' contest, as well as parades.

    Chonburi, Oct 1 (EFE/EPA).- Thailand celebrated its annual Chonburi Buffalo Racing Festival on Thursday with around 300 buffaloes thundering down the track to roaring cheers from the crowd.Divided into categories according to size, the buffaloes raced throughout the day, with some jockeys taking a spill.The festival is held every October by farmers to celebrate the rice harvest and mark the end of the Buddhist Lent, according to an epa-efe reporter.It dates back more than 140 years and is thought to be the only one of its kind in the world.The colorful festival also includes a decorated buffalo beauty contest, horse parade, wagon parade and music and food.The seaside city of the province of the same name is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of Bangkok.
