Japan and South Korea have removed the other's special trade privileges in recent weeks. They have a long history of diplomatic and territorial disputes with relations increasingly strained under the current administrations.

  • South Korean protesters rally against US special envoy for North Korea's visit

    Seoul, Jul 7 (EFE/EPA).- South Korean protesters on Tuesday rallied in Seoul against a visit by the US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun. Biegun is scheduled to arrive in Seoul on Tuesday for discussions on the stalled nuclear talks and current tension with North Korea.Protesters were demanding the dissolution of the US and South Korea working group. During his three-day visit, Biegun is scheduled to meet South Korea’s chief nuclear negotiator Lee do-hoon and Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha to discuss the situation in the region after Pyongyang recently cut all communication with Seoul and blew up the inter-Korean liaison office on its territory.Biegun may also meet with the newly appointed national security advisor and former head of South Korea's main intelligence service, Suh Hoon.
