Calm returns to Cali as President Duque tries to appease social discontent

Description

Cali, May 13 (EFE).- Cali, a Colombian city of 2.2 million and the cockpit of chaos, appeared calm on Thursday, following a series of sometimes violent demonstrations that have been going on for two weeks. The Government of Colombia has showed signs to give in to some of the demands to appease the social discontent in the country and insists on inviting the organizers of the strike to a dialogue table. These demonstations began due to a now-cancelled tax reform. They later morphed into national strikes to protest the policies of President Ivan Duque, calling for an end to some of them and demanding effective action to halt police brutality.
