DNA Leads to Mother's Arrest in 2003 Slaying of Twins

Description

In 2003, newborn twin boys were found abandoned in a garbage can. The mother was never found. Now, Cook County sheriff's detectives have arrested and charged the boys' mother, 41-year-old Antoinette Briley, with two counts of first-degree murder. DNA tracing led to the identification of 41-year-old Antoinette Briley as the twins' birth mother. Law enforcement tailed Briley until they saw her drop a cigarette on the ground. They retrieved the cigarette and extracted the DNA from it. Briley says she gave birth to the twins in a bathtub, then placed them in a duffel bag to take to the hospital. En route, she abandoned them in the dumpster.

  • Not Quite A Perfect Match: Twins Are Not Genetic Clones

New research shows regardless how similarly they may look, identical twins are not exactly genetically the same. Icelandic researchers sequenced DNA from 387 pairs of identical twins — those derived from a single fertilized egg — and their close relations. According to HuffPost, that allowed them to find early mutations that separate identical twins. A mutation is an alteration in a sequence of DNA that can influence physical features or susceptibility to certain diseases. On average, identical twins have 5.2 of these early genetic differences, the researchers found. But about 15% of identical twin pairs have more genetic differences, some of them up to 100. That could influence why one twin is taller or why one twin is at greater risk for certain cancers.

In 1999, 23-year-old Jennifer Watkins was found, her body wrapped in plastic, in the stairwell of the hospital where she worked. Now, Colorado Springs police report her sexual assault and murder has finally been solved, thanks to DNA collected at the scene. Newser reports that thanks to the help of a public genetic genealogy database, cold case investigators were led to Ricky Severt. Although Severt died in a car crash in 2001, familial DNA collected from his surviving relatives shows Severt cannot be excluded as the prime suspect. Both Watkins and worked at the same hospital. And while Severt cannot be brought to justice, police are sure they've finally found their man. After all these years, we are grateful to finally give Jennifer Watkins’ family the answers they deserve. Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski
