Cannon fire rings out at the Tower of London in a ceremonial "death gun salute" in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, who died peacefully at her Balmoral estate on Thursday afternoon. Ninety-six shots -- one for every year of her life -- were fired from Hyde Park and the Tower of London in the capital, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland and Cardiff Castle in Wales, as well as the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. Military guns are fired at the Tower of London on the stroke of 3:00 pm local time (2:00 pm GMT) to mark the start of Prince Philip’s funeral service, taking place at Windsor Castle, and the start of a minute's silence observed across the country. Saluting batteries fire two rounds, one at the beginning of the minute's silence and one to mark the end of it. Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, died eight days ago at the age of 99.
