Lawyers leave a Brussels court after hearings in the case of former European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili, former MEP Italy's Pier-Antonio Panzeri, human rights lobbyist Niccolo Figa-Talamanca and Francesco Giorgi, a parliamentary assistant with the European Parliament's Socialists and Democrats group and partner of Eva Kaili. All are charged with corruption in an alleged bribery plot by Qatar. IMAGES
A vice-president of the European Parliament, Eva Kaïli, has been arrested by Belgian police in connection with an investigation into corruption that implicates World Cup hosts, Qatar. Images show Kaili defending Qatar from criticism of its labour rights record and calls out Western hypocrisy. Speaking in front of the European Parliament in November, Kaili says "Qatar is a front-runner in labour rights, abolished Kefala, introducing minimum wage" and that "some here are calling to discriminate (against) them...but still, they take their gas, they have their companies profiting billions there." Belgian prosecutors have opened a probe into Russian "interference" in the European Parliament following allegations lawmakers were paid to spread Kremlin propaganda, Belgium Prime Minister Alexander De Croo says. "Our judicial authorities have now confirmed this interference is subject to prosecution," De Croo said. "The cash payments did not take place in Belgium, but the interference does. As Belgium is the seat of the EU institutions, we have a responsibility to uphold every citizen's right to a free and safe vote." SOUNDBITE
